अंतर्नाद वर हा पहिला लेख लिहीताना महाराष्ट्रात "मराठी विरुद्ध अमराठी" असा एक तथाकथित संघर्ष चालू आहे. तथाकथित अश्यासाठी, की सामान्य मराठी माणूस ह्या संघर्षात किती सामील आहे ह्याबद्दल शंका आहे.
मुळात "मराठी-अमराठी वाद"... आणि तो देखील मुंबईत निर्माण व्हावा अशी खरंच परिस्थिती आहे का? आम्ही का उत्तर प्रदेश आणि बिहार मधून आलेल्यांना असे वागवू? त्यांनी आमचा रोजगार बळकावला, किंवा ते आमची समाजव्यवस्था गढूळ करताहेत असे आरोप किती बिनबुडाचे आहेत ! हा कोण्या एक व्यक्तीचा राजकीय भयगंड आहे.
हा विचार करतानाच मनात विचार येतो मराठीच्या भवितव्याबद्दल होणाऱ्या चर्चेचा. ही मात्र नक्कीच काळजी करण्यासारखी बाब आहे. एक हजार पेक्षा जास्त वर्षांचा इतिहास असलेली माझी भाषा इतक्य सहज विलयाला जाऊ शकते? ज्या भाषेत ज्ञानेश्वरी लिहीली गेली, पंत, संत आणि तंत कवींपासून ते आमच्या बहिणाबाई, कुसुमाग्रज, विंदा, वसंत बापट, पु. ल, अगदी नव्या पिढीला नादवणाऱ्या संदीप खरेपर्यंत साहित्यिक आणि कवींनी ज्या भाषेत रचना केली, ती माझी मराठी काळाच्या पडद्याआड जाईल ? कोणतीही भाषा जिवंत ठेवायला आणि वाढवायला त्या भाषेतलं साहित्य आणि त्या भाषेची रुजलेली मुळं कारणीभूत असतात. आणि नेमका हाच विचार मनाला अस्वस्थ करतो.
आमची खरंच मुळं मराठीत रुजली आहेत? आणि आताच्या आईबापांची असली तरी पुढच्या पिढीचीदेखील मुळं मराठी मातीत रुजलेली असावीत ह्याची काळजी आमच्यापैकी किती जणं घेतात? एखादा बंगाली आपल्या मुलाला झोपवताना जितक्या आत्मीयतेने "भजो गोरांगो" म्हणतो, तितक्या जिव्हाळ्यानी आम्ही "गाई गोवर्धन, हिंडे गं बारा रान - तिला संगत गं छान, गोपाळांची ।" म्हणतो ? आम्ही जर आमच्या मुलांना "येरे येरे पावसा, तुला देतो पैसा" सोडून "Rain rain go away little Johnny wants to play" शिकवणार असू तर आमच्यासारखे करंटे आम्हीच. आजूबाजूला बंगाली, पंजाबी, तमीळ लोक राहात असोत वा मेक्सिकन, स्पॅनिश, जर्मन... आपली भाषा, आपली संस्कृती आपणच जपायला हवी.
आमच्या पोरांना पु. ल. वाचायला द्यायचे की जे.के रॉलिंग, लता मंगेशकर ऐकवायची की मडोना हे तर आम्हीच ठरवणार ना? आमच्या घरात डेलिया आणि कॅक्टस बरोबर एक तुळशीचं रोप जोपर्यंत आहे तोपर्यंत मराठीला काहीही होणार नाही. पण फक्त तेवढ रोप मात्र जपायला हवं.

I dont entirely agree with this blog...I dont have marathi font, else I could have posted this entirely in Marathi. You say that you dont want marathi to vanish from the world and its upto the current generation to imbibe that in the next generation. My question is why?? There was a script named "MoDi". My grandmother was fluent in it and she said that great stuff has been written in MoDi. She taught me MoDi. What more could she have done?? I never read anything in MoDi after that. So, is MoDi dead?? Yes and no. Yes, in the sense, nobody talks in that language. No, in the sense there still are scholars who want to study it and read all the great literature present out there. Noone can kill a language. And definitely not a culture. Can u ever say that Sanskrit is dead?? And take my word even "Sanskriti" cant die...If a Maharashtrian person(me) can study Bengali just to understand Tagore's Gitanjali...then why do u think people will not learn marathi to read Dnyaneshwari??
I wont mind if my children do not speak a single word of marathi as long as they speak nice positive words. I might feel their loss that they cant listen/read Pu La Deshpande, but I can be glad that they are reading P.G. Wodehouse. They might never listen to Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, but they might love Bach and Beethoven. And yeah, I will definitely teach them "Rain Rain go away" whether or not I teach them "ye re ye re paavsa" ...Do you remember Vaishali Sheth?? She never knew Marathi when she joined our school. She knew Gujrati. In Gujrati "I dont know Gujrati" goes "Mane gujrati nathi aavadtu". She learnt bits of Marathi and translated it as "Mala marathi aavdat nahi". Everyone who heard that hated her... This was a small example. You can see a lot of Indians, making some extremely embarassing statements due to lack of language proficiency. e.g. One marathi friend of mine translates "Tumhi karu naka, mi tumhala karen" as a response to "Can I call you?". He says "You dont do me, I will do you". I wont like my kid saying that to anyone...and definitely not unintentionally...:)
The truth of today's world is that every person has to be a citizen of the world. English is NOT the largest spoken language in this world. Then why do we learn English?? Because more countries have it, though not the population. In a few hundred years, all the countries will HAVE to come to a single language concept. Mostly they say that this single language will be Sanskrit. If it does turn out to be Sanskrit, would u not deprecate the people who insist on maintaining their culture by talking say - English?? What would you say?? "Keep Sanskrit the main language, then every person can learn second language depending on their preference"...Then why cant u accept same thing about english??? World is becoming a bigger place, every person needs to be a bigger person...If your kid loves marathi, he will learn it whether u ask him to or not...and that has nothing to do with how much u force him. As long as u have taught him to read good stuff and learning languages just as a mode to understand good stuff, you dont have to worry about the medium he studies in. I could never write correct marathi myself, but I can safely say I have read 50% of the classic literature in marathi. I was really glad that in eighth standard i got rid of the subject, but even today I can read swami, rau, chanakya or even va pu or pu la or even the more contemporary authors with interest. And I think that is something which neither my parents nor my school could give me or take away from me...
